The Rule of Three Adaptation Rights Picked Up by Horror Producers Behind Smile

The horrifying thriller, The Rule of Three, isn’t coming out until June, but that hasn’t stopped Hollywood from fighting for the right to have the story scare its way to a theater near you sometime in the future. Part of that might be the book’s compelling story, and part of that might be that the listed author, Sam Ripley, is a pseudonym for a bestselling British author.

According to Deadline, the producing company Screen Gems bought the film rights in a competitive bid situation, and Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey from Temple Hill—the company behind the horror film, Smilewill produce.

Deadline describes the premise of the book thusly:

Can you change your own fate? That question haunts three women. As they become increasingly convinced that a mysterious urban myth called the Rule of Three is real, they must find a way to break the curse or be doomed to die like those who came before them. But when you’re not sure if what you think is happening is even the truth, how do you know if you are actually in danger? And if you don’t know, how will you be able to protect yourself? If death comes in threes, who will survive, and who will solve the Rule of Three?

Intriguing! While the parties talking to Deadline declined to give the identity of the author behind Sam Ripley, a bit of easy internet sleuthing comes up with author Andrew Wilson: Wilson fits the description from Deadline and used the pseudonym Sam Ripley for another novel back in 2011.

As for the film adaptation, things are still in the very early stages, with no screenwriter yet attached to pen the script. If the final film is anything like Smile, however, it will likely be a creepily terrifying watch.
